3 Ways Your WHY
Can Save the Day

3 Ways Your “Why” Can Save the Day

Iʼm in the fortunate position to be able to say that I love my work. Working in sales has taken me much further than I ever could have imagined back when I was an unemployed actor/hand model.

Sales has given me a solid income, I work for myself, I have an awesome team and get to meet someone new everyday. Most of all, it gave the freedom I wanted.

But some mornings when my alarm goes off at 4 a.m., I donʼt want to get up. There are days when I think about whatʼs in store for me and I think, “screw

you Monday morning!” Why get up when I know Iʼm going to have a difficult call with a buyer whose apartment isnʼt selling and refuses to believe her Hello Kitty themed bathroom isnʼt a problem? Add to that a difficult co-op board meeting and a square footage discrepancy on a $20 million-dollar apartment and yeah, thanks Iʼll stay right here! In my bed!

While these thoughts do flash through my mind sometimes, I never let them take over. I turn off the alarm (eventually) and get up. I do this because I know my career is about much more than dealing with ridiculous decorating choices and square footage for huge apartments. Itʼs about WHY I need to do what I do.

Sure, most of us need jobs so we can do things like eat and pay rent. Thatʼs a given – but dig deeper. Why have you chosen your current path? Whatʼs the big reason behind everything you do? I forge past the obstacles, the disappointment and the chaos because I am a born competitor. I need to work in a career where there is always more to reach for. Iʼm constantly asking whatʼs next, what can I try now, how much further can I take this? Itʼs the limitless possibility of sales that compels me to sit up, put on my favorite headband and workout clothes to get to the gym and move on with my day (even if itʼs full of challenges).

Knowing your real WHY – your power, your force, the reason you take on

the challenges, means the difference between massive success and just going through the motions. Do you want to be a person who just goes through the motions? Returned calls, check. Paperwork, check. Or do you want to be a person who jumps into every day knowing that oh my god, anything can happen! My WHY gets me through the toughest moments, and I urge you to consider the following so you can get in touch with your WHY:

  1. What does your ultimate career look like? You are the engineer of your own destiny. You are all the creator of your own career. You have the power to design a career that makes you happy, brings you income – and challenges you every, single day. What does the career of your dreams look like? Engineer a career for yourself thatʼs amazing.
  2. Describe your inner force:Iʼm all about expansion – always in all ways. I would never be happy being a CEO in an office, knowing Iʼve made it to the top. I did it! I can die now! Iʼm super competitive, and curious about every possibility. Those traits mean I need a job with ZERO ceiling. I need to be in a position to aim higher every, single day.
  3. Whatʼs the best part? The truth is, while I love sales Iʼm not walking into an apartment and thinking, wow, look at those columns! I envy realtors who literally love real estate. Sure, I love it – but not necessarily for the same reasons. Itʼs satisfying to connect a family with their dream home, or find the perfect apartment for a person who is just starting their life in the big city. Closing deals isnʼt just about making money, itʼs about connection and providing an absolutely excellent service.

We all have days that are dark. We have weeks when everything feels shitty and itʼs tempting to pack a bag, jump in the car and hit the highway never to return. Getting to know your WHY – thinking deep about your purpose for what you do will serve as a reminder that those dark periods are temporary, and theyʼll fly right by before you know it.
