How to Get a NY Real Estate License

Who Are You?

No matter where you are in life today, you’re probably reading this because you’re thinking about how to get a NY real estate license. Perhaps you’re at a crossroads and ready for a big change. Or, maybe you’ve dreamed of selling real estate your whole life, and now’s the time to finally jump in.

Wherever you are, I understand the process feels overwhelming. I was there once!

Back before I became the real estate agent you now know from Bravo’s Million Dollar Listing New York…. Before I became the #1 agent in New York City, selling a billion dollars in property every year…. And before I led a sales team of 60 agents…

I was just like everyone else struggling to get by.

Actually, I tried to make it in NYC as an actor first. I got my real estate license as a survival job so I could do showings in between auditions. Real estate became so lucrative that I became absolutely addicted to the deals.

Now here I am, 12 years later, running the best team in all of New York and the third best team in the entire country.

I couldn’t have picked a better career.

How Long Does It Take to Become a Real Estate Agent in New York?

That, my friend, is a question for you. How long do you want it to take?

If you’ve read my book, Sell it Like Serhant, you know I’m a believer in initiative. In fact, initiative is my favorite word.

In other words, do it now. If you feel like your back is up against a wall, use that as your driving force. Let that wall motivate you to get your New York real estate license faster.

If you feel fenced in, remember, you have the ability to take that fence down. Or hurl yourself over it. It’s worth every effort it takes to climb over every fence in your way to become the you that you want to be, achieving your full potential with nothing left on the table.

Here’s the Best Guide to How to Get Your NY Real Estate License in 2021

The minimum age to get a New York real estate license is 18.

After that, you’re good to go. If you’re older than 18, even better. Through personal experience, you’ve quite possibly developed the character it takes to be effective at sales. You’ve got energy, enthusiasm, and endurance. Now all you need is the right education.

Complete a 75-hour NY Department of State qualifying course.

There are online courses available if you want to get your real estate license in New York. You’ll discover them with a simple Google search.

But, if you want the best online real estate course in New York, take Sell It Like Serhant: New Agent Sales Accelerator, which includes 75-hour pre-licensing, state-qualifying course delivered by New York Real Estate Institute AND my proprietary sales system. You’ll get all my personal tips, tricks, and strategies you need to become a successful New York real estate agent. AND, you will become qualified to be a New York real estate agent.

You’ll have access to the complete course immediately upon registration. How quickly you’ll move through the course is entirely up to you.

Register for and take the NY real estate salesperson exam.

Schedule your exam using eAccessNY. On the test date, make sure to bring your government-issued, state-approved photo identification. Also arrive with the printed page, “Summary of your Submission.” You’ll receive this when you schedule the exam.

The NY real estate salesperson exam is based on your 75 hours of education that you’ll do through the New York Real Estate Institute course included with Sell It Like Serhant: Sales Accelerator. The test itself takes about one and a half hours. You’ll receive a score of a pass or fail. Results are available as soon as scoring is complete and are valid for up to two years.

Get sponsorship from a licensed NY real estate broker.

Your sponsoring broker guides you through your first year as an agent. Pick someone you like spending time with. Choose a broker that inspires you, and choose one that runs his or her own team. My #1 mistake starting out was not joining a team. Now, I encourage everyone to start with the right broker and the right team.

How do you find the right broker? Go to open houses, ask around, and see who you like on social media. Some brokers will actually recruit YOU right when you walk out of the testing center.

Don’t worry, there are plenty of brokers out there looking for new agents. The key is finding the one YOU like, not the other way around.

Apply for your license using eAccessNY.

After you’ve passed the test, and found a sponsoring broker, apply for your license. Your sponsoring broker must sign into their own eAccessNY account to authorize the application. Once the state of New York issues your real estate license, you’re ready to start selling!

How Much Money Can I Make as a Real Estate Agent?

Twelve short years ago, I wasn’t able to pay for my own tofu and yogurt at a Food Emporium in NYC. My debit card declined at the cash register and I didn’t know what to do, so I ran out of the store, hopped on the subway, and cried.

Yup. True story.

Now, twelve years later, I’m renovating a multi-million-dollar, six-story townhouse in Brooklyn, have my own driver, am in my ninth season on a Bravo TV show called “Million Dollar Listing,” have a successful vlog channel, and run a 60-person real estate sales team.

It took a lot of hard work. I was missing out on weekends so I could show real estate. It took a willingness to take some pretty wild rides to close my first big deals. I had to reinvent myself in ways I never thought possible.

You can do it easier and better.

I didn’t have a mentor nor did I have someone showing me the ropes. I had to learn it the hard way: By myself.

But I’ve got good news for you. You don’t have to take twelve years to figure it all out like I did.

Trust me: If I did this, coming from being a stranger to New York City whose debit card was declined while buying tofu and yogurt, you can too.

When you enroll in Sell It Like Serhant: New Agent Sales Accelerator, you get your entire, state-required pre-licensing course PLUS everything I know about selling real estate in the world’s most competitive market.

My program is going to easily put you five years ahead where I was when I was just starting out.
