California Real Estate
Licenseby Ryan Serhant
Looking for information on how to get your California real estate license? I’m about to tell you everything you need to know to become a real estate salesperson. The process might feel intimidating, but I promise you won’t regret it! Before I started in real estate, I had zero money and my debit card was declined when I tried to buy tofu and yogurt at the grocery store. That moment felt like true rock bottom, and I decided it was time to get my real estate license and begin a new career. As a result of that decision (and a lot of hard work that came after), I now sell more than a billion dollars in real estate every year. Anything is possible in this field! If you’re ready to get licensed as a real estate salesperson and begin your career in California, here’s what you need to do:
To Get Your California Real Estate Salesperson License:
- You must be at least 18
- You must complete three courses from the required course list
- You must apply for and pass the California real estate salesperson exam
- You must find a California real estate broker to sponsor you
- You must activate your California real estate salesperson license
Now, here’s more detail on the steps to get your California Real Estate License:
Sign Up for the Required Real Estate Courses
I created the New Agent Sales Accelerator, which combines the California-state-required real estate courses from the Rockwell Institute PLUS access to my #1 real estate sales course. The Sell It Like Serhant Course is my exclusive real estate training program that will guide you through every single aspect of being a successful real estate agent. It includes the exact templates, techniques, and tips that I use to close deals, create leads, and generate BILLIONS in sales. You’ll also receive members-only access to my newsletters and social media pages, which are the perfect places to network with other agents and refer business back and forth. If saving money matters to you, I highly recommend you go for this package deal! For a discounted price, you’ll get the courses you need now to get your license, AND the training you’ll need later to become a real estate rock star.
Once you pass California exam and get your salesperson license, the Sell It Like Serhant Course will guide you every step of the way through your career. This is an advanced training program that includes the exact templates, tips, and techniques that I use to generate leads and bring in billions of dollars of business each year. When you join the Accelerator program, you also receive members-only access to my newsletter and private Facebook group where you can network with other agents. Simply put, this package gives an aspiring real estate salesperson everything you need to be a huge success, just like me.
Take the California Real Estate Salesperson Exam
Once you’ve completed your required courses, you will apply to be approved for the California real estate salesperson exam. I recommend you fill out the combination application, which allows you to apply for both the real estate exam AND your California real estate salesperson license in one form. Submit the form, including a certificate of completion from your approved courses included with my New Agent Sales Accelerator, get fingerprinted, and pay a fee. Once you’re approved, the California Department of Real Estate (DRE) will send you an Examination Schedule Notice. You may then schedule the real estate salesperson exam through California’s eLicensing system.
The California real estate salesperson exam will have 150 multiple-choice questions, and you’ll have three hours and fifteen minutes to complete it. If you score 70 percent or above, you pass! Then, you’re ready to activate your license.
Find a Licensed Real Estate Broker in California to Sponsor You
Your “sponsor” broker will co-sign your application for a California real estate salesperson license. He or she will also provide guidance during your first year as a real estate agent. This is a requirement under California law, but having a mentor can also be a huge asset to a new agent. I regretted not joining a team when I first started out, so I recommend you find a sponsor broker with a team that you can join. There are always brokers who are looking for entry-level agents at any given time, so ask around, go to open houses, and find someone who can truly be an asset to you.
Apply for Your California Real Estate License
Time to make it official! If you filled out the combination application for both the real estate exam and your salesperson license, you’ll just need to log onto the DRE eLicensing website to activate your license. (If you only filled out the exam application on its own, you’ll be sent a California Salesperson License Application to complete upon passing the exam.) Follow the instructions for yourself and your sponsor broker to complete the eLicensing application. Once you submit the information, sign the forms, and pay the fee, you’ll be approved, and you can start your new career!
