5 Habits You Must Give Up to Be Successful

5 Habits You Must Give Up to Be Successful

It’s easy to look at a successful person and think, “I want that.” You know what’s not so easy? Actually putting in the work it took to get there. So, here’s a big secret: That “work” isn’t just about long hours, hiring the right people, and building a recognized brand—it’s also about evaluating yourself and making sure your thoughts and actions are serving you instead of hurting you.

I write books, create courses, and post constantly on social media because I want to share all of my knowledge with you—especially the stuff that I learned the hard way. This isn’t just for people who want to get into real estate; Regardless of what field you’re in, so much of what makes or breaks success comes down to human nature. Today, I’ll share five common habits that can come between you and your goals in any career. If you haven’t gotten to where you want to be yet, something on this list could be the reason. Read through it, be honest with yourself, and make the necessary changes to align yourself with the future you want.

Five Habits That Can Hold You Back From Success:

#1: Being a perfectionist.

Have you ever heard the phrase, “Perfect is the enemy of good?” Keep that one in mind when you find yourself obsessing about getting something just right… to the point where you fail to take any action at all. While you’re sitting in an office all night, revising plans and stressing over things not being “perfect,” your competitor is moving forward, launching websites, creating a product, and making revenue. By the time you’ve finally launched your idea, they’ve revised theirs twice. See where I’m going with this? Don’t let the desire to make things perfect halt good progress.

#2: Trying to do it all yourself.

Learn to lean on people! Yes, you might be the smartest or the fastest, or the most experienced in the room, but one person cannot do everything (unless you want to burn out and fail before you’ve even started). Even Picasso had students who traced and prepared his canvasses before he began to paint. Delegate tasks to staff and leave yourself free to focus on the ones that are uniquely suited for you and your skillset.

#3: Wallowing after a mistake.

Not everything is going to go smoothly. There will be mistakes—some costlier than others—and you will feel like curling up into a ball and hiding at some point. DON’T. The thing that separates successful people from the ones who give up is simple: Successful people don’t give up. You learn to roll with the punches, keep things moving, and you don’t devote time to wallowing that could be spent course-correcting.

#4: Fearing embarrassment.

I hear people talk about a fear of failure—Our parents used to be scared of failure. Now, in the social media age, what we’re really scared of is embarrassment. It’s that constant vulnerability of failing in public that haunts many people. If you fail, you don’t just fail privately—You fail in front of your friends, family, customers, clients, old coworkers, high school classmates, followers, fans, and perfect strangers. Everything is out there for everyone to see. That makes taking a risk 1,000 times scarier. Know this, be prepared for it, and push through it.

#5: Listening to everyone else’s opinions.

Not everyone is going to support your ideas. Some people are going to think you should do things differently, or not pursue your dream at all. Guess what? That’s OK! You don’t have to listen to everyone’s opinion. Instead, listen to yourself, listen to the smart people you hire, and learn to tune out negativity and noise. If you need guidance, find a mentor in your field, or a person who fully understands your vision and can give you honest, supportive feedback. The peanut gallery will always be there, but you don’t have to pay attention.
