How to Get Your California Real Estate License

Looking for information on how to get your California real estate license? I’m about to tell you everything you need to know to become a real estate salesperson. The process might feel intimidating, but I promise you won’t regret it! Anything is possible in this field! If you’re ready to get licensed as a real estate agent and begin your career in California, here’s what you need to do:

To Get Your California Real Estate Salesperson License:

  1. You must be at least 18
  2. Complete three courses from the required course list
  3. Apply for and pass the California real estate salesperson exam
  4. Find a California real estate broker to sponsor you
  5. Activate your California real estate salesperson license

Sign Up for the Required Real Estate Courses

Take the California Real Estate Salesperson Exam

Once you’ve completed the required courses, you will apply to be approved for the California real estate salesperson exam. I recommend you fill out the combination application, which allows you to apply for both the real estate exam AND your California real estate salesperson license in one form. Submit the form, including a certificate of completion from your approved courses included with my New Agent Sales Accelerator, get fingerprinted, and pay a fee. Once you’re approved, the California Department of Real Estate (DRE) will send you an Examination Schedule Notice. You may then schedule the real estate salesperson exam through California’s eLicensing system.

The California real estate salesperson exam will have 150 multiple-choice questions. You’ll have three hours and fifteen minutes to complete it, and if you score 70 percent or above, you pass! Then, you’re ready to activate your license.

Find a Licensed Real Estate Broker in California to Sponsor You

Your “sponsor” broker will co-sign your application for a California real estate salesperson license. He or she will also provide guidance during your first year as a real estate agent. This is a requirement under California law, but having a mentor can also be a huge asset. I regretted not joining a team when I first started out, so I recommend you find a sponsor broker with a team that you can join. There are always brokers who are looking for entry-level agents at any given time, so ask around, go to open houses, and find someone who can truly be an asset to you.

Apply for Your California Real Estate License

Time to make it official! If you filled out the combination application for both the real estate exam and your salesperson license, you’ll just need to log onto the DRE eLicensing website to activate your license. (If you only filled out the exam application on its own, you’ll be sent a California Salesperson License Application to complete upon passing the exam.) Follow the instructions for yourself and your sponsor broker to complete the eLicensing application. Once you submit the information, sign the forms, and pay the fee, you’ll be approved, and you can start your new career!
